The New Charleston Lighthouse in Charleston Lights Up South Carolina
The New Charleston Lighthouse in Charleston is located in South Carolina and is an important part of the state’s history. It is not only the last major lighthouse constructed by the United States government, but also a major structural achievement. The New Charleston Lighthouse stands 163 feet tall, and takes a tourist 74 seconds to reach the top. Even when the elevator stops, the tourist still has to climb an additional 25 feet to reach the top of the lighthouse.
Visitors will notice that the New Charleston Lighthouse in Charleston is shaped differently than the traditional lighthouse. This lighthouse actually looks like an air traffic control tower and has a distinctly triangular appearance. It is constructed from steel and aluminum. This may reduce some of that southern charm visually, but it does help the tower to stand strong even against winds in excess of 100 mph.
Inside, visitors are treated to an air-conditioned room and a comfortable elevator ride up. It is interesting to note that at one time, the New Charleston Lighthouse had a major candlepower output of 28 million. Naturally, this disturbed and even scared some nearby residents, and eventually the tower was downgraded to just over one million candlepower. At one time however, it was the second brightest light in the world!
