Being Outdoors is something we can all enjoy. A little fresh air can be helpful to anyone. Indoors can be fun and entertaining, but people aren’t made to spend all day inside! We didn’t even have computers until the eighties, so people used to have to entertain themselves in other ways. Everyone should take a break to have a little time outside. You don’t need to take a run, or a day-long trip to the mountains, but just a little time will be helpful. If you are an adventurous person, doing things like Little Miami River canoeing and kayaking is a lot of fun. Little Miami River kayaking can be a great way to let loose after a stressful week in the office. It can be a fun, and somewhat nerve racking experience if it is your first time. It is an awesome way to bring families together and enjoy the nature around us.

If you are going to spend a day on the water, you have to be prepared however. If you don’t prepare yourself in the right way, you may be stuck in the middle of a stream hungry, wet, and sun burnt. Always bring something to eat. Water activities burn a good amount of calories and you will be hungry come lunch time. You may not expect how draining it can be. Your face and arms and part of your legs will be uncovered the whole time. If you don’t put on suntan lotion, you will be very pink. It is very smart to pack all of your things in a water proof container. A gallon sized plastic bag would work or you could go the extra mile and buy a water-proof bag. If you don’t feel like you would be comfortable in the water, there are other fun outdoor sports to get involved in. Hiking may sound extreme, but in reality everyone can do it. All you need is is to find a trail and some minor equipment. I suggest getting hiking shoes but sneakers would also work fine. Depending on what type of hiking you are planning on doing and how serious you are about it, you may want to get a backpack to carry with you. If you are going to be going on a long strenuous hike, you will want a place to store plenty of water, snack and sunscreen. Also, always take a cell phone and back up phone with you on major hiking excursions. Some people may also advise you to take a GPS or compass, but that is only relevant if you aren’t taking a preset trail.

Everyone can find a niche outside. Whether it is walking, running, hiking, or being in the water; there is an activity for everyone. You may enjoy the exercise aspect of it, or the peacefulness of being in nature. Birdwatchers and extreme mountain climbers are all alike in the sense that they love the outdoors.

GPS were originally used in military and other government applications. Today, it is also used in other areas like navigation and sports. Though GPS is composed of electronic devices, some handhelds can be used in water.

This is all possible because GPS is already made waterproof for practical navigation and sports. Though they were originally intended for land use in military and government applications, technology enabled GPS to be functional in water despite its electronic components.

Though they used to be expensive, waterproof units are now available at an affordable price. For sea kayakers, it provides accurate data about their path in the middle of the sea. Bikers can also benefit from waterproof units because they encounter varying weather conditions aside from moist and humidity. It is also portable and easy to use, making it an indispensable navigational tool for sportsmen.

In buying waterproof GPS handhelds, some characteristics should be understood because they often appear in specifications sheet and are good measures when comparing units. The following terms are also applicable for non-waterproof GPS.

POI or Points of Interest: Aside from maps, GPS features setting of POIs or waypoints along the course taken by the user. Such waypoints can be a public restroom, campsite, or coordinates where they changed directions. It helps travelers and sportsmen to remember important spots and make their way back. Some models allow log tracking and sharing of waypoints between handhelds.

Topographical Maps: Most GPS can electronically display 2D or 3D maps, but older models do not. For such models, plotters will be required to have a printout of the map. Advanced models can go beyond normal topographic information by implementing Digital Elevation Model technology, commonly called as DEM. It is a feature to have better visualization of contours at different zoom levels. Moreover, handhelds can store new maps by accessing data cards and compact discs.

Some advanced features of waterproof GPS handhelds are touch screen displays, switching from driving and sports activities, and memory slots. Some also features displaying of marine information like sea depth, ports, and tidal information as well as digital compasses. The package is floatable in case it is dropped in water. Two-way radio is sometimes included in the unit, but using it might require FCC license to ensure that it will not cause interference with other device.

Touch screen and switching between urban driving, hiking, and water sports are some advanced features of waterproof GPS handhelds. It can also have memory slots and digital compass. Since its main feature is usability in water, new models also show sea depth, docks, and other related information. Its package was designed to float to get it easier when dropped in water. Some units have built-in radios to provide communication within 5 miles, as long as there will be corresponding FCC license.

If there is one thing to consider when buying your next sleeping bag, I say its all about temperature. Get the right range! If the forecast says its going to be warm during the day and then cool off overnight, find out how cold cool off really is, then buy the sleeping bag that is good to 20 degrees below that!

Two years ago, my husband and I decided to get a bigger boat (a common problem with boaters) and we found one in late October that was perfect. It was kept at a marina a few hours West of where we live, so we decided to bring it home by driving it down river, more cost effective than having it trailered. However, the boat had no heater.

It was time to get a new sleeping bag. So off to the Internet I raced. After checking 2 or 3 weather reports, I searched for info on sleeping bags that were good down to around 45F. Of course, I ended up with information overload – everything from synthetic versus down filled, to size & color & length & shape & blah blah blah.

Overloaded with information, I ended up choosing a pretty blue sleeping bag which matched the color of our new boat. It was made by Mountain Hardwear, was good to 50F and was in my price range. Too bad I didn’t look around a little more, I would have noticed other sleeping bags in the same price range which were good to lower temperatures.

But no, I went with color and completely regretted the decision that night. Arriving at the marina to pick up our boat in the early morning, the temperature was in the mid 60s and we enjoyed a lovely day cruise down river. We ended up on one of our favorite islands near Brockville, Ontario and had a nice meal just as the sun was setting.

Darkness came early and we knew we’d have an early start, so after a quick tour of the island to let our dog do his business, we made our beds in the aft cabin and were asleep by 10:00 p.m. A few hours after midnight, our dog woke me up and when my feet touched the floor, it felt like there was ice in the cabin!

I quickly ushered the dog into the cabin then dove back into my sleeping bag, but I swear my feet didn’t warm up all night – it was miserable. I didn’t even have the benefit of my husbands warmth, because he was all bound up in his own misery right next to me.

After a long and miserable sleep, we woke early and dressed quickly. We heard on the radio that the temperature had dropped to 25 degrees overnight! I discovered the hard way that there is nothing worse than being cold on a boat. And weather forecasts are often wrong! So, when buying your next sleeping bag, get one that says it works to temperatures 20 degrees lower than you think you might need – you won’t regret it!

As a Biker I love to take long Rides on my 2007 Harley Davidson, Nightrain. Some times a trip to Connecticut where one has the freedom of choice to decided if they want to wear a Helmet or not is a great place to go. Often I head up to the NY Catskill Mountains, Where a Burger and a Beer at Nicks Waterfall House in West Conesville can be the perfect end to a day of Cruising threw the Mountains.

Then there is another of my Favorite places to ride to, The Lake George NY area. My Uncle has a small Cabin in the Mountains right outside of the town of Lake George where I often stay. The area has some great long and winding roads for riding, These roads will relax even the most stressed Motorcycle rider.

There is so much history to the Lake George NY area. While on a trip one year riding around with no real destination in mind, I found myself in front of Fort Ticonderoga (fort-ticonderoga.org). Being very interested in American History I had to stop in and take the tour. The Fort was built between 1755 and 1759 and has plenty of stories to tell. It had a big roll in the American Revolution. As I walked around the Fort the I could almost imagine I had traveled back to the 18Th Century, The things I learned reminded me of the sacrifices our fore Fathers made to secure the Freedoms we enjoy and let slip threw our fingers every day.

Another thing I like to do is ride on some of the less traveled roads. Riding on a road where you see nothing but Forests and small Waterfalls for miles is very relaxing. I like to search out small little Dinners and eatery’s, Stopping at them and trying some of the foods they have to offer.

I recently met up with my Mother, Sister, Brother, Nieces, Nephew and other members of my family at the Lake George Escape Evergreen Resort Campgrounds (LakeGeorgeEscape.com), I found it a great places for me to relax for a few days. There where plenty of activities for the kids and many activities I could enjoy with the kids. In the resorts game room I won my Nieces and Nephew many prizes and I played (or maybe Battled is a more accurate word) Air Hockey with my younger Brother in the game room for hours. The resort has a pond and two pools to Swim in. Each week at the resort during the Summer has a thyme and while we where there it was Halloween week. The Camp Grounds has Nightly Hay rides around the Camp Grounds and since it was Halloween week my Brother came up with the idea of throwing out candy to all the kids as we took a Hay ride around the grounds one night. The Cherry on the top of this great resort has to be the on Grounds full service Tiki style Bar where most Nights they had a DJ to help keep the party going!

Many other things I have stopped to enjoy while riding around and staying in the Lake George area is White Water rafting, Hiking and many Trips to Six Flags Great Escape & Splash Water Kingdom. The park was known as Storytown USA when it first opened in 1954. As a Kid I used to love to watch the gun fights in its old western area known as Ghost town. The park may be much larger now and have many modern day Rides and attractions, but all the old Story town, Jungleland and Ghost town areas from the 50′s and 60s are still there! Then of course there is the town of Lake George it self with many great stores for shopping including a new shop I found last year called DILLIGAF’s. Many Arcades, Museum’s, Para Sailing, Night Clubs and Many Places to eat including some Waterfront Restaurants. Now in my opinion no trip to Lake George can be Complete without a Paddle wheel Cruise on the historic and scenic Lake George itself. The lake is known as the Queen of American Lakes. There are Two maybe three Companies you can use, But I recommend you take your trip on the Lake George Steamboat Company’s (lakegeorgesteamboat.com) Minnie-Ha-Ha. I have Pictures of me getting on this Boat with my Family that go back many years.

As Bikers We are always looking for Great places to ride to alone or with our friends and family that offer both great riding areas and many things to do. I have found Lake George to be a great area for both!

Maybe I will see you there! Your Bro L.J. James AmericanBikerX.com Listen to LJs Radio Show at BikerLowDown.com

The Garmin Handheld GPS 400t like it’s predecessor the Colorado 400c features a three inch diagonal touch screen with the latest touch screen technology. Touch screens have become very popular on high end electronic devices and the Colorado 400t is no exception.

The color screen is highly readable under direct sunlight and this is remarkable because most of the units of similar type fails miserably in this department. Thanks to the innovative software which has been programmed into the Garmin handheld GPS Colorado 400t, the interface is easily understandable both for the experienced and not so experienced user. Due to this interface which states all the important guidelines on the screen, the device is fun to work with, especially outdoors.

The ABS plastic case of the Garmin Handheld GPS prevents moisture from being a problem. It is not waterproof if submerged in water however. Like all electronic devices be aware of the limitations of the devices exposure to water. Just don’t dunk the Colorado 400t in water and you should be problem free from moisture causing a problem with it’s function.

Topographic maps, of the USA have been preloaded into the unit. Three dimensional view of the map is also made possible in the device. The unit may be very useful for those who are into hiking and mountain climbing. All the relevant details about the local and national parks and sanctuaries, coupled with information about rivers and lakes are also preset in the Colorado 400t handheld GPS receiver.

The Garmin Handheld GPS Colorado 400t has the ability to share with other Garmin Colorado and Oregon users data with the click of a button. Geocaching files can be downloaded from any computer to use and share. The touch screen allows viewing in three dimensional view for a better understanding of the terrain. The points of interest entered in the Colorado 400t are easily accessible with the touch screen.

The Garmin Handheld GPS Colorado 400t is Geocaching friendly and is a great GPS unit for the sport. You are able to download Geocaching files without having to manually input them. All you need to do is download the files and then go geocaching. By being able to download the Geocaching files, entering files is now almost automatic. As Geocaching becomes more popular downloading Geocaching files is a great time saver that can be used for your outdoor adventure.

The Garmin Handheld GPS Colorado 400t photo viewer supports JPEG file format. It also is a very easy unit to carry. It is slim and light and is easy to carry in a pocket or on a belt clip. Garmin has scored a win with all the user friendly attributes of the Colorado 400t.

With plug in SD cards usable in the Colorado 400t you can input most any geographic data as well as street maps for almost limitless navigation. The card slot is located inside the waterproof battery compartment for data safety. With the Colorado 400t your adventure potential is limited only by your imagination.

Outdoor enthusiast a generation ago had to rely on maps, compasses and landmarks for navigation in unknown territory. There were unseen dangers due to getting lost in dangerous areas and even not being to find your way back to safe areas because of weather. Garmin Handheld GPS units and others have changed the dangerous into exciting adventures. Now you can navigate to anywhere and back without becoming lost or getting into unsafe areas by using a GPS unit.

Exploring the great outdoors entails risks that can be dangerous if you get lost in unsafe or unfamiliar territory especially in unexpected bad weather. Garmin Handheld GPS units are especially popular for hikers, bikers, Geocaching, hunters, fisherman, and boaters. Some of the latest Garmin units include instrumentation to help predict changing weather.

GPS units can replace the traditional compass, paper maps or relying on landmarks to guide you. Terrain and even traveled roads can change from what they were on maps that may be outdated. GPS units are also accurate in inclement weather conditions as well as good weather.

With GPS technology and electronic mapping you can explore unfamiliar territory without the fear of getting off the course you choose to travel. With Garmin Handheld GPS tracback technology you can retrace your trip exactly. If you are a boater or fisherman you are able with GPS technology to keep up with where you are, where you are headed, speed you are traveling and return to an area or spot where fishing is the best. Also GPS units are just as precise at night as in the daytime.

With Garmin Handheld GPS receivers you can transfer data to and from a computer. You can download data from a computer and then share that data with other Garmin users in the field. You can share fishing areas as an example, or hiking or biking trails as well. You are only limited by the data you collect or download.

The Golfing game has been changed for many by using a GPS unit to give distances of the next shot and the correct distance of the last shot which can improve your game. The Garmin Handheld GPS Approach G5 golfing unit comes preloaded with thousands of golf courses in the USA. It also allows you to map any course not included you might wish to play. Try a GPS unit for your golfing and improve your game.

GPS technology has generated new outdoor activities and new sports. Geocaching is an example of a new sport that combines an outdoor excursion and a treasure hunt into a day of excitement for many people. Another new sport generated by GPS technology is Geodashing. Geodashing is an outdoor race to a precise coordinate that can even be across country.

Just as cars are more advanced today than in the past GPS technology is advancing at a fast rate also. Garmin Handheld GPS receivers become more advanced with each product release. Whether you are a boater, hunter, fisherman, biker, hiker or engage in other outdoor activities requiring GPS technology, you will find Garmin leading the pack.

Bicycles are one of the best ways to take in nature. They’re quiet enough to not disturb most wildlife, fast enough to make a journey of quite a few miles feasible during the course of a day but not so fast that they cause tourists to miss anything. The Assateague Island National Seashore has some of the best nature biking trails on the east coast, many of them paved, which makes touring here on a mountain bike easy and fun.

If you want to get an even more close-up view of the natural surroundings, there are miles of hiking trails as well. The National Park Service recommends bringing durable boots and bug repellent. The Island is a humid climate and that can mean the mosquitoes can be thick at times. The natural beauty, however, far overshadows any inconveniences caused by the bugs.

For those who really want a fast-paced adventure, the Assateague Island National Seashore is one of the best areas around for over-sand vehicle cruising. It requires a permit, available from the National Park Service and, of course, some consideration for the natural environment.

Its that time of the year when you celebrate your birthday, 55th one this year. Your wife, just a few years behind, asks you what you’d like as a present. Hmmm let’s see … you’ve got a cupboard full of gifts you haven’t really used so what else could there be? We’ve got an option you’d love to try. How about taking a cruise? Where? Well- anywhere you want to go … there are so many cruise lines world over!

How about a Mediterranean cruise – along the Nile or an exotic one in Asia – Thailand or Hawaii? Costa Rica? Or a cold adventurous one through the Arctic? The choices are a plenty and each one different from the others.

Apart from the places you visit enroute, the cruise company has its own party planned on the liner. The luxurious interiors of a ship are complemented by the activities such as pools, casinos, fine dining, dancing and many more. You can decide on the cruise that fits your mood and your age too! Yes, cruise lines offer specialized itineraries for different groups. If you feel adventurous, you can opt for the cruise offering offshore hiking and other adventure activities. If you want a relaxing holiday, go for one with more sightseeing programmes. You might even be tempted as many others, to pick more than one cruise – it would be so memorable.

One of the best parts of a cruise is that you get to see so many destinations in one trip. Besides, the ship docks for a few days in one port for supplies. This helps passengers who get to sightsee in peace. It is a boon for the travelers who like to enjoy the local attractions.

In case you can’t plan too much in advance or have decided to take a cruise at the last minute, you needn’t despair. Most cruise lines offer a variety of departure schedules so that you can adjust according to your comfort. Certain cruises last quite a while.

When you are in the over 50s age group, you would more often than not want a relaxed peaceful trip. Maximum excitement could be the festivities on board or the marine life you get to see. People have reportedly seen dolphins swimming beside the liners at see a number of times. You could probably report a similar experience too while you sit by the pool side on the deck and enjoy the brilliant sun, the sparkling sea, azure sky, starry nights and the cool sea breeze!

Travel agents will gladly take care of your booking and provide all the required information on your chosen cruise. If you like, you could access website on the Internet. Browse around for a good deal being offered specially to patrons in their fifties! You’ll get some special rates and discounts. Price listings can be obtained and special information can be requested through online brochures. These websites also give departure schedules and ports enroute.

A cruise travel is a wonderful investment. The returns are memories that stay with you a lifetime! Go traveling in style.

Looking for the perfect luxury trip for your vacation? Why not consider taking the Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise tour? Perhaps you didn’t know that this famous and fabulous cruise line ventured outside the tropics, but they offer many wonderful other locales as cruise destinations, and Alaska is a terrific one.

A Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise tour features both times at sea in the beautiful west coast waters and times ashore for a truly spectacular land tour component. Tours can be as short as seven nights or as long as thirteen days and you can do the land portion before or after the sea cruise in most options.

The choices are extensive with 19 different tours to Alaska alone and six more to Whistler and to the majestic Canadian Rocky Mountains. You will see spectacular scenery, wildlife ashore and at sea, and awesome natural features such as glaciers and even a volcano.

Alaska is a bold state with exciting cities and charming natural preserves with something to meet every taste and expectation. On the ship, there is fabulous cuisine and the usual cruise activities in pure but affordable luxury. A Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise tour can cost the same or less as a much more mundane visit to an expensive city where costs can really add up. On a cruise tour, your expenses are completely predictable for lodging and most meals and activities.

Some of the points of interest on a Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise tour may include the enormous Mendenhall Glacier, the active Hubbard Glacier and the sparkling Juneau ice fields. Juneau also has much to remind you of the romance of the great gold rush.

Some of the experiences your tour may include are boating while at sea, fishing, and other water activities. Ashore, you can experience the thrill of a dogsled, hike among incredible scenery, or see the sights on a mountain bike. Your days can be active wilderness experiences while your nights are formal cocktail parties and dances. There is a little of everything.

When you pack for your wonderful Alaskan adventure, you need hiking shoes and clothing as well as more formal attire for nightlife and on board activities. Women need cocktail dresses and men need suits or tuxedos. You can even rent your formal wear right on the ship. Most days are quite casual. Remember how far north you are and bring some warm things even in the summer.

The great outdoors can be so relaxing. Please don’t disagree if you’ve never given it a go. You definitely need to experience Mother Nature before dismissing it as bothersome or annoying. It’s imperative to get the full-on dose at the right time of year. Of course the right season varies from person to person.

For me it’s fall, but for others it could be spring or winter time. Yes, I did mention winter time. Although it may be chilly, you can appreciate the fact that mosquitoes and ticks won’t eat you alive like they will in the summer. So then there’s camping, hunting and fishing. These are the epitome of outdoor activities. Especially if you’re heading up through the woods. It’s not all about nature hikes and rock climbing.

The entire time I grew up in the rural area of Iowa, my father was an officer of hunting and fishing. A game warden for short. Now, I know what you’re thinking. Iowa has no rural area in particular; the entire state is rural. In fact, it’s one gargantuan corn field. This is what a buddy of mine thought anyway. Once I moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, folks thought I was from the back woods. My buddy actually asked me if we were the only house in Iowa. Wow, are people ever naive! Iowa is a state; not a corn field. Anyway, I certainly received my dose of hunting and fishing while living in the heartland.

Anything from deer hunting with a shotgun, to bass fishing on the Mississippi, to turkey hunting with a long bow. I was able to experience a range of hunting and fishing activities. However, I did grow tired of the hunting part. These days I no longer care to sit quietly in a tree stand and wait for a massive buck to stroll past. Fishing on the other hand is still outstanding. I think it’s the fresh trout that I love so much.

Definitely take the time to learn all about camping, hunting and fishing before tackling them on your own. Find out what supplies are imperative and what seasons will work best. And always remember that with hunting and fishing comes responsibilities. You can’t simply run out in the woods and start gunning down deer like it’s no big thing. There are rules to this sport. Follow them respectfully and you’ll have a great time.
